This is a group project that aims to boost the careers of select young artists in Nairobi.

If Not Now is an project of young art-makers who seek agency on their own terms. It is an effort to carve out a niche in an expanding art space that has no surface onto which they can grasp. This exhibition considers alternate ways and places that art can be shared with the public outside of conventional gallery and educational structures/systems. Where else can art be experienced and by whom? And how does the work interact with its environment?

If Not Now is an active participation in and a laying claim to a time and place that is (meant to be) equally available to those who make art-objects/concepts.

To wait then, is to wait eternally.

And if not now, when?

In order to have these opportunities we seek as young artists - to exhibit, engage with and earn from our art - we would need to make them ourselves. And in addition to creating these opportunities for ourselves, we are adding to the arts infrastructure within Nairobi.

Through self driven initiative, those involved will not only be able to expand their career prospects significantly but also add much needed diversity to the current art scene in Nairobi. This is not only regarding the type of art consumed but also what counts as art and art making in Nairobi.
